Almost every good character-driven episode belonged to him. He was keeping the show afloat, while Kyle&Stan were jerking off as almost mute straightmen self inserts and Kenny is an actual mute and a prop. Kenny serves more as decoration, he's worse than the 4th Ghostbuster member.

Maybe if he had intelligence/self awareness.

I will still pick almost any character over Kyle and Stan. All Bender/Cartman needed was a straightman side. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde characters are the way to go.
