Because for better or worse, Superman is inevitably related to 50s anti-communist propaganda. Americans are obsessed with the 50s one way or another. The first time it was used massivelly was during the 60s when Nixon whined about the civil rights movement and feminism while remembering the good old days in the 50s. People often forget Nixon won two elections. Also inevitably the 50s nostalgia lead to seething over uppity minorities and women leaving the kitchen.
