Simpsons, DTVA, Family Guy, and SpongeBob are only allowed to have frame by frame animation because they are cash cows.

Remember that era of Looney Tunes where they had a ton of money, fame and aclaim, but instead of doubling down on what made them popular with bombastic expression, there was a shift to making tiny, micro expressions more funny?

Just me? Ok.

Why did they make that reference anyway?
Surely the writers weren't old enough to know that one?
When did Spongebob start having excessive eye bulge shit? I don't remember it being even in post movie/pre-sequel Sponge.

well, another alternative to lazy flash animation is ambitious flash animation. Motorcity plug.

That was just Chuck

True, but my point still stands. Just because you have more money now and more expressive, expensive animation that's clearly had a lot of work put into it, doesn't mean it's good or suitable to every scene it's flexing in. Or more importantly, it doesn't mean it's funny.
Whatever people were boarding those first 3 seasons man, there was definitely someone who knew how to write good jokes, kept the whole thing so focused, so funny. That's why new Spongebob makes me sad man, it used to be so fucking funny.
Now? Pic related.
