Great original series

Why is Avatar so cursed as a franchise?

>Cursed
Executives and fart sniffing lead artists having no idea what made the original so good, specifically the heavy involvement of professional martial arts choreographers and extremely talented spot writers hired on a per episode basis with no nepotism to lean on and become a permanent hire.

>calling it "cursed" when Paramount opened an entire animation studio JUST to make Avatar franchise content, including a trilogy of big budget theatrical films right off the bat

>RPG and MMORPG
Platinum already made a fucking excellent Korra character action game tech demo, just get them to go finish it.

Seeing the track record I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

Just because the executives saw ATLA remain N°1 on the Netflix rerelease for who knows how long doesn't erase the decade of piss poor decisions.

>In an interview with Comic Con Meta*Pod, DiMartino explained, "We've been involved in all those main ancillary stories, so in our minds it's mostly canon. There’s probably some stuff if we may go back, like: 'that doesn’t totally line up with this', so there may be some little tweaks here and there, but as of right now we’re proceeding as if all this stuff is part of the proper universe and hopefully building on it."

>"I think the thing we're not doing now– not saying this couldn't happen some day– is, like, we're not adapting the graphic novels into a [movie or] TV show, we're not adapting the YA novels into a movie or TV show. Again, that could happen in the future." Co-creator Bryan Konietzko added, "But we are feeding off of them."

that just means more chances to shit on its already tattered legacy

I reckon it's mostly just bad luck, plus the difficulties of the it being part of the very niche medium of non-comedy western animation.

By the sequel series of Korra, the rapid popularity of the iphone and ipad meant that many children got entertainment from apps, streaming services, or youtube instead of TV, which diluted the already niche marketplace.
Because of this Korra would have two huge problem's in it's production which are responsible for like 90% of Korra's faults.

Firstly the whole show had a dirth of writers. At peak the show had like 5 or show writers while ATLA had 15. Including the main writers of ATLA Aaron Ehaz, this meant that there were fewer people to come up with ideas, fewer people to come up with good lines and dialogue, and fewer people to review the overall plot to get it going in a good way.

Then there was how it was produced. Despite very popular belief, Korra was greenlit for two seasons, each season containing two books right from the get-go.
Which meant that basically all Books were produced at once. Which was a real fucking mistake since it meant that sometimes as many as 32 episodes could have been being produced at the same time.
Which only exacerbates the problem with the writer shortage.

The other big issue was that the show went for a serialized format which even by then was becoming a dominant format for television.
And I think that was a mistake which meant that the show couldn't include more world building or one off episodes. And it meant that each episode except for the finale lacked a good conclusion

The comics suck because they are things they have to get people to buy. So they have to manufacture conflicts and melodrama which is often out of character or just unnecessary because of the happy ending Avatar had.

The comics are largely written by individual writers too and most often ones who never even worked on the original show.
That doesn't help.
Also they need to tie in the terrible world-building decisions of The Legend of Korra, which doesn't help.

Avatar video games were generally pretty mediocre as most licensed games are.
And the Shamalan movie is such a bad adaptation it's laughable

Will the Netflix live action show suck? Depends how much they deviate from the original.
ATLA is one of the best cartoons America ever made, it's my second favorite cartoon behind the Simpsons, and outside of a few things, was super well done.
It's also something really hard to do in live action, since the bending and the unique sets and designs are one of the few instances where animation is cheaper and quicker than live action.

If the Netflix show is just the original show, often using the same exact dialogue, but making the first book tighter and expanding on some points which the kids show couldn't touch. (like the Air Nomad genocide) then it could be pretty good and get the more mainstream audience of adults interested in the franchise.

Wouldn't count on it though.

>Why is Avatar so cursed as a franchise?
George Lucas Effect. The showrunners surrounded themselves with hyper competent people that were able to sift nuggets of gold out of their shitty ideas, then when the resultant product was a success they fired all those competent people because they thought their ideas were what made it work.

Fuck, now I want some actually good stories from avatar. Any decent fanfics that aren’t just porn?

Traitor’s Face is good.

Depends, do you like Stargate?

Yes.

Reign of the Fire Lady Dowager takes forever to update but the concept is great and the story’s been pretty good so far.

Morality Chain is damned good but also been going for literally ten years.

Some things just shouldn't be a franchise, PPG and Toy Story suffered because of it

Yes. Said so in the comics
