Would any Pymfags be upset by this? Are there REALLY any iconic Pym stories worth saving during this time? This seems like the cleanest way to save Pym, the slap would have never even happened.

If they'd done it immediately it would have worked, but doing it now, you'd be losing the entire "Dr Pym" era in West Coast Avengers, 90s Giant Man, 2000s Yellowjacket, and the whole Mighty Avengers/Avengers Academy years. is probably right that no matter how hard anyone tries to retcon it, someone else would bring it back, just like in the 90s when they tried to absolve Hank by blaming it on Kang making a failed attempt to mind control Hank that had caused his breakdowns, and it was undone a few years later.

Brevoort won't allow it because it would invalidate too much Avengers lore. Dan Slott, at the height of his power at Marvel, pitched the idea when the decision to make Hank a skrull in Secret Invasion and Brevoort vetoed it.

I don't know much about Pym, but did he do anything that was completely inexcusable? If not, a reasonable answer is that he used to be an asshole, but not he's not.

Pym's last big arc before this had Ultron alter Pym's memories and made him believe the Avengers were his enemies. At the end of the arc he was dragged off screaming revenge on them and how Janet betrayed him. One off hand comment about how they'd try to study Ultron's machines to fix Hank, and he would show up seemingly normal a few issues later. It was later added that Stark applied electro-shock therapy as part of it. It's pretty easy to have Ultron show up and mock them for their failure to undo the damage and their failure to help him after. Ultron shoulders the "responsibility" of it. Hank, Jan, and the Avengers still keep their personal failure at ignoring the problem until Hank went so far off the deep end to build a giant robot to attack the Avengers.
You could even have Ultron show up with a Salvation-Prime robot to attack the avengers for a big punch up, and have Ultron declare Salvation as his creation that he merely implanted in Hank during the mind alteration as a contingency.
