maybe I'm just an ignorant racist but what was so bad about apu's character and why did he need to be removed from the show? is it the funny voice? seems ridiculous considering everyone in that show has a funny voice, not just apu.

Somebody complained and they didn’t want the hassle or bad press
>but they could have ignored it and it would have went away
Probably, but that’s not what they did, and we can’t change the past

First gens being uppity.

He didnt properly portray the modern view of indians, which is of someone that does phone scams on the elderly, shits on streets and harrasses women online.
So he had to go.

Some Indian actor complained for the purpose of generating outrage. It's especially stupid considering that that actor has himself done roles where he'd played a far more insensitive portrayal of Indians.

People have become hardwired to find inconsequential things offensive now, and ignore actual offensive things. The days of Mexicans celebrating Speedy Gonzales are over.

wanting to get rid of apu is even stranger because Apu seems like a very virtuous and hardworking character, a role model even.

They didn't write him off or anything?
Just up & cut?
Fuck's sake, hope that worker's strike kills off the show.

He was removed because the Person who got him removed wanted to voice him and they said no. It was an act of revenge. There was nothing racist about him, in-fact the Person who got him removed was extremely intolerant of other cultures from the looks of it.

Ah yes, the same nigger that gained his 20 minutes of fame by making an edgy Power Rangers short (and went on to say that fucking Power Rangers was "more mature, serious, and morally gray" than Star Wars)... then gained some 20 more minutes for this, then made the hour with that shitshow of Neflixvania, what a fucking clown.

Apu himself isn’t really a bad character, he’s actually one of the more fleshed out supporting characters in the show. The simple truth is that he started out, like most side characters, as a one note gag and that gag was “Convenience store guys are always Indian”. Simpsons started in the late 80’s when the image of the foreigner was a lot more broad stroke. They knew nothing of Indian people besides Hindu statues, curry spices, and thick accents, so that’s all Apu was as an immigrant character. He became more over time, but when you think of Apu’s contributions to the Simpsons brand identity it more or less ends with “Thank You, Come Again!” Nowadays there are several generations of people who have lived their whole lives in America. I see about 7 Indian college students walk by my work every day and I don’t at all associate them with Apu. But in the 90’s, especially if you were living in a rural area, your only real insight into an Indian would probably be this cartoon clerk, and if you were the son of Indian immigrants or even an immigrant yourself, chances are you heard that famous phrase shouted at you more than once in your life until the early 2000’s came along and it switched to jokes about White Castle.

I’m not saying getting rid of Apu was the right move, I don’t even think it made sense to bother when the show is already so past its prime, but I totally get why an Indian person would be bothered by it.
