Magic in comic book universes is infamously inconsistent and whenever Superman encounters a villain with magical powers, the bad guy gets a case of the stupids that keeps him from using his powers to their full extent. A bad guy could turn Superman into a chicken. Kill him and cook his corpse. But instead they always fall back to the default magical energy blast that just knocks him over.
