I wouldn’t trust anything Nico says about the wider attitudes of the industry, seeing as he seems to think he’s the center of it when that couldn’t be further from the truth. Some of the gossip and anecdotes he’s disseminated do seem mostly legitimate but he still generally exaggerates his own importance to any story

The best way I can put it is that Alex is the kind of guy who is deeply up his own ass about his work and is deeply pretentious behind the scenes.
Combine this with the fact that his team had to basically guilt him into doing S2 of Gravity Falls and his lack of projects since then make him out to be the animation equivalent of a one of those old-school Uni level college art teachers who praises "High Art" while not having done any himself in years and instead is a prick who sleeps with his students.
A good example of this is that interview where he gives his thoughts on Kingdom Hearts, KH as a series has plenty of problems but his entire focus was on how disingenuous it was and shit like that with no actually thought on the actually series just that the idea itself was "wrong".

Exactly but he didn't focus on any actual examples of it being cringe (which it super is) just that the concept itself was "cynical" which is fucking out there as outside of the series and some Fighting Games the only people who make things like that are autists on deviant art and the like and that's always done from a place of love even if its cringe.

It doesn’t really contradict his own stories about sleeping under his desk and how hard he overworked himself, but I’m surprised how much people are bothered by it when it seems like the vast majority of the crunch to make the show was stuff he put on his own back rather than anything he inflicted on the rest of the crew.
It honestly comes across like people who don’t want to strain themselves to make something great thinking his dedication to his art sets a “bad example” especially since the result earned him so much acclaim and one of the popular social media presences of any creator, so they latch onto whatever deflates his ego a bit.
Also he’s an outlier in being more of a hipster type and not a nerd overly obsessed with anime, video games, or collecting toys which makes him like a jock to these people
