Steven and the CG had fought the Diamonds before. Blue and Yellow are great examples of how to resolve their conflict because its in tune with their whole reason, motivations, goal. They're fighting out of grief and anger for the death of their "sister" so finally getting confirmation that Rose, A) Didn't die and B) Had a child and Steven's the rightful heir was all they needed to stop fighting. While this was a good starting of point, they did nothing to propel this. With White Diamond it makes sense or is at least understandable that their would be more of an aggressive fight and a bigger fallout

No the goal/idea isn't for them to go sad that they shatter. That's just an oversimplistic take of what I said, the idea is for them to have drastic conflict with themselves (Man vs Man). Steven represents everything they hate, stood against, or never understood, so it'll take more than a snappy comeback or one scene of progress to turn them into smothering Aunts like you see in Future. Them (well really White Diamond, seeing as to how Blue or Yellow already have a good potential solution here ) cracking/shattering is only the result of this conflict and their change, in a very corny way, they're breaking their shell and becoming something entirely different.

I don't like these arguments because they're Thermian. The Diamonds aren't real people, they're fictional; and the writers have total control over their story and characters. They didn't HAVE to make the Diamonds equivalent to a hundred nukes, yet they did. You haven't resolved the issue, you've just changed the question from "Why didn't Steven fight the Diamonds?" to "Why did the writers decide that the Diamonds couldn't be fought?" which isn't any better for your case.
