Redo his backstory so that it supports our armed forces instead of being hippie propaganda for pacifist cucks. Have Maria die in a radical Islamic terror attack that the Robotniks failed to prevent because, being degenerate weirdo academia freaks, they didn't cooperate well enough with the US military personnel who'd been assigned to them. Shadow is then brainwashed to blame America for what happened, because the Robotniks are bitter, and he actually fights on the terrorists' side for a time before realizing to his horror how he's been lied to. Maybe it would make for a more red-blooded and less homosexual generation of Sonic fandom.
Actually, to that same end, play up Shadow seeing Maria as a lost love, too; make it unthinkable for the faggots in the fandom to ship him with Sonic. He should have a pseudo-love-triangle going on where he's torn between the hot-but-too-easy hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold and his lost-Lenore memories of Maria.
