I think the reason why people are more open to Miles as the new Spiderman, as opposed to other attempt to swap over heros (color change or not, because this is a problem even when they try to replace superman with another white superman), is cause Miles is a loser, like Peter Parker. They have broadly the same backstory, being nerds who aren't good at juggling their social life. Therefore the identity of Spiderman remains the same.

Well Peter isn't exactly popular, he has a pretty self-contained circle of friends from his college days, coworkers, and friends of friends.
