Furman wrote fembots fine in other universes. IDW was just meant to be his playground after Dreamwave exploded and he wanted to play around with a loosely hard-sci-fi approach to it. The problem was trying to mash early IDW into All Hail Megatron and further.

Headcanon: Primus still utilized the concept of gender after he and Unicron turned into planetoid chunks of metal and both turned into mechanical planets. This is because as the leader of the Gods of Order, Primus had companions of both genders and he still used that when he created the Primes (with Solus Prime being the first female one and each other female descended from her).
Then again there is nothing sexual here as Primus's creations are entirely mechanical and don't have a concept of reproduction like organics have.

IDW is losing Transformers by the end of the year.
Unlike characters like Drift who became memetic enough to pump into other franchises, or characters like Windblade that Hasbro is desperate to push, Nautica will likely be tossed into the closet and never used again, just like most of the IDW-originals.
