Japanese public schooling is insanely competitive and cutthroat, but their universities are really easy compared to top American schools. So we have almost opposite academic culture. For us, public school is basically daycare, and then college is where all the losers and idiots are weeded out, but Japan winnows their students early so that by the time they get into college, nothing will ever be as hard or as stressful as trying to get into college.

Shenmue has some good parts but both of those characters are gone by Episode 6, and Made in Abyss is visually great and has great music, but focuses more on the kids getting naked, talking about peeing and pooping, and gore for my taste.

Except for one thing: high school is not compulsory in Japan. Compulsory education in Japan only goes up to middle school. If you go to high school you have to opt-in. Despite this, something like 99% of all teenagers in Japan attend high school. So really, the winnowing starts in middle school. Anybody who is really not cut out for education drops out before they even get into high school.
