He was trying to kill himself the whole movie. The theme for toy story is always existential crisis.

I wouldn't even say it killed it, 3 felt like the trilogy ender and their fate after that was living with the new kid. This felt like necrophilia digging up the franchise for one more installation.

The entire Toy Story universe is extremely dark if you think too hard about it.
