What stopped Squidward from taking the secret formula and just selling it to a restaurant chain, for quite possibly a lucrative amount of money, and living for the rest of his life as a more happy squid that didn't have to work at a dead end job anymore?

Squidward doesn't know it because he doesn't fry cook.

He doesn't believe in feeding others slop even if they're swine.
So he wouldn't want to make it even harder for honest food to get by.

You don't think Krabs would come after him for that?

Krabs would sue the hell out of him for giving away trade secrets.

I know for a fact that this thread will devolve into people shitting on modern Spongebob soon enough so let's get right to it. The only people still hating on Spongebob are those that haven't watched an episode in 12-15 years. So many people still think season 6 is "Modern Spongebob". They think the spinoffs are inherently bad because of a quote from Stephen Hillenburg for 20 years ago. They don't realize that he had a heavy hand in creating the 3rd movie and definitely knew about and possibly even worked on both of the currently running spinoffs prior to his death. Hatred of modern Spongebob stems from general ignorance and abundance of misinformation.

I watched an episode at a hotel on Saturday. I don't know what season it was from, but it was the one where Patrick throws a tantrum whenever he hears a bell so Mr.Krabs takes him to some wrestling match for money. It was some of the worst television I've seen in years. I also caught the tail end of one about the Goofy Scoopers or whatever, the dubstep/EDM shit was caner, but the one joke about the bridge was alright.

Weren't there actually sometimes in early episodes where they depict Squidward as able to cover cooking responsibilities when SpongeBob was unavailable? And then later they start depicting him as comically incapable of cooking as a joke.

>for quite possibly a lucrative amount of money
There's no real secret to some combination of ketchup, mustard, mayo, and possibly ranch or thousand island dressing.
Once you've worked in a few restaurants, you know all the secrets.

Hatred of modern Spongebob stems from it being ass. The other shit about Hillenburg are just excuses that fans use to seem self-righteous.

a) This is a cartoon
&
b) Those aren't actual burgers

It was the other way around. Season 1 had the famous Pickles episode where Squidward had to take over because Spongebob wasn't in the right mental state to work. I believe this is the first time first time we actually see Squidward do ANY actual work at the Krusty Krab. Prior to this, he is really only seen standing around and we have the Pizza episode where he doesn't do much besides nag Spongebob for the whole trip. Bubble Bass's order is the first order we ever see him take without interruption and he doesn't understand it and insults Bubble Bass without provocation or even knowing anything about him. Meanwhile, Spongebob is able to hear, understand and cook the order in the time this time and is still kind to Bubble Bass despite having some sort of adversarial relationship with him outside of work. Then when he has to take over Spongebob's job, he burns all the food even a milkshake somehow.

Squidward is rarely shown doing any work for the first few seasons and fucks it up almost every time. As the show has gone on though, unless there is a joke or plot explicitly about him being lazy and bad at his job, he does just fine and is even shown doing Spongebob's job a few times. He's also adopted being decent at cooking as one of his main character traits but he mostly does it at home and mostly either bakes pastries or cooks fancy gourmet stuff that no one else likes. So, Squidward now is more or less treated as someone who could be equal to Spongebob as an employee if he applied but he rarely does. Rare bit of character development for this show.

I liked it when they gave the characters a bit of nuance. Spongebob thrives at the Krusty Krab because it's his passion, while Squidward sees it as beneath him. He shouldn't be tortured for his grouchiness because not accepting things as they are is punishment enough.

Considering all Plankton had to do was order a krabby patty himself, Squiddy correctly surmised that any attempt at trading secrets would result in being double-crossed or being rewarded inadequately.

I've watched a couple really recent Spongebob episodes and it's not good at all, it feels like it's for preeschoolers.

This.

Cartoons are for children? Who would have guess?

Bro...that's exactly who it's for. It's a cartoon

Squidward isn't the best guy, but he's not a criminal. If anything, he's a snitch.

You zommies wouldn’t know this, but cartoons used to be written to appeal to everyone.

Knowing Mr. Krabs he probably makes his employees sign some crazy fucking contract that basically sells their souls to him if they ever blab about the secret formula.
