Because their relationship started as mere vapid fangirlism from Barbara. That isn't so bad on itself, but they only grew that close during Bruce's jerkass TNBA stage where almost everyone agrees he became more unlikable.
Many forget that in the 66 show Barbara actually was much more of an adult holding a job than Dick, who was only in high school, and Gordon actually tried to set her in dates with Bruce. Yet nobody minds that because for all his quirks you can buy Adam West Bruce could hold a functional human relationship.
That, and Beyond showed they are doomed to fail anyway so there's no reason to invest on them as a couple.

Pre-Crisis Babs was introduced as having a Ph.D. and was in charge of Gotham's public library system, and later got elected to Congress, so yeah definitely with you there. My dad still complains about how she was reimagined post-Crisis.

there was no big soap opera shit so far as the animated series was concerned tho. if you watched beyond, you only got the impression they tried it later in his career but it's the same old story with bruce where he won't give up the mission for the woman, so she married someone else. it sounded very mature if anything. barbara wasn't acting like some spurned lover.

One of the main things that makes those ships shit outside of fetish stuff is that the parties involved have literally nothing in common outside of capes. and where is that in the timeline because from bab's story in beyond, it seemed like it was him and her for a long time there at the end before she got sick of capes and jumping off rooftops but he didn't want to stop, so she just decided to move onto the next stage of her life. she didn't seem mad over it at all.
nightwing was already a dickhead for most of the series anyways. he stopped getting along with bruce when he was still a robin. it was always a frigid relationship from that point on. there's literally an entire episode of that shit of him talking to the new robin. not shocked at all that they eventually just never even bothered talking to each other anymore. hell bruce didn't even talk to clark and diana anymore and they were actually on good terms with him.

Early TAS Batman is like Bronze Age Batman, which is writing him likable enough while still keeping him dark and gritty.
TNBA Batman was more like the asshole late 80s-early 90s Batman, from Year One's publication to Tim Drake's intro, which softened him a bit until the 2000s made him more of a dick than ever before.
