I found an interview with Dana Simpson on YouTube from a few weeks ago commemorating Phoebe and Her Unicorn's tenth anniversary, and she gave some new information about the Nickelodeon project.
It's going to be a movie first, and then a series. It's currently in the script phase, but other than that, she doesn't know much about it. She doesn't even know if it'll be 3D or 2D, though she wants it to be 2D.

Another thing to note is that the series originally started production at Amazon, but then it was cancelled due to an executive shakeup, resulting in Nick picking it up a couple years later.
