ah yes, a video game company quivalent of Nickelodeon
Greedy and stupid? Yeah pretty much.
I agree with this but spongebob fans have a parasocial relationship with their product and feel the need to invoke Hillenbergs name into every little thing after his death and its getting weird.
Yeah, I think NFTs are retarded and respect Hillenburg but this is weird, I don't mean to insult the guy or his legacy but if he really cared that much about the environment why did he let Paramount use Spongebob's face on literally every product ever? even the ones that directly affect marine life like picrel
Why the fuck do you care
I hope whatever utility the blockchain has gets monopolized by a merger of corporate and government interests, if not one or the other. Open-source technology is a blight on this world, emblematic of the eleutheromania that will be any nation's downfall.
i don't understand how NFT's can pollute the environment. Can someone explain?
The specific blockchain servers NFTs are hosted on are run in third world countries where power is almost all derived from coal. The amount of coal burnt per NFT is very large.
It's mainly just that blockchain networks in general use a LOT of electricity. So when NFTs with 10,000 variants are created and traded around, it uses a fuckton of electricity. Particularly in countries that aren't known for their clean energy sources.
Environmentalist eleutheromaniacs want to poison the well by pointing out that crapto requires electricity to function, instead of focusing on the part that matters, which is the childish mindset that births crapto in the first place.
I don't think that running a server 24/7 really burns as much coal as say, complex math chains when minting bitcoins. I mean it is still energy spent nihilistically on a fiat currency but it's more like the cherry on top rather than the point?
How do NFTs consume more energy than any video, gif, or flash animation on the internet?
UH, COMPUTERS USE UH ELECTRICITY AND, UH, THAT'S BAD!
Then we might as well stop using the internet altogether to save the environment.
crypto is mined on computers. Computers use energy. That's it. It's a corporate made environmentalist scare.
Obviously Viacom doesn’t give two shits about a dead man’s legacy or some rando fans demands. They just want to profit as much as possible until it sinks.
In fairness, there's a good chance Steve had little say in what merch got made. There have been stories from other cartoon creators over the years like Mike Judge, Seth MacFarlane, Matt Groening, J.G. Quintel , Alex Hirsch etc. where they barely are aware of some products even existing until they so happen to see it on a store shelf or have someone on a radio or TV talk show present them with it.
Here's Mike Judge being shown a ton of Beavis and Butt-Head merch by Howard Stern as a good example, where it's more or less stated that Viacom/MTV/Paramount or whoever own the IP and can thus do whatever the fuck they want with it.

To quote a joke from Family Guy where they start ragging on Seth MacFarlane for things like FG DVD box sets not even being full seasons, "He doesn't make those decisions, Chris, those decisions are made at a corporate level".
I hop they make thousands of spongebob nfts because it makes people on twitter angry.
>NFTs use up so much energy
So do television shows. So do websites like twitter. So do a lot of fucking things we don't need.
Trying to speak on behalf of a dead person in order to push a cause you believe in is absolute horseshit.
>In fairness, there's a good chance Steve had little say in what merch got made.
If you create a kid's tv show you know that they're going to wind up producing a lot of plastic crap that will wind up polluting the ocean as a result of your show. For a guy who "cared about the ocean," Spongebob has done little good for the ocean and a lot of bad.
