The original 5G storyline probably made more sense as Dick and Kory were actually older and were probably his parents
The storyline was immediately ruined when they tried to put it in the present day timeline

Ah, you never saw the show. Red X was a villain who appeared in only three episodes. See, originally he was merely a disguise Dick was using. But then someone stole the costume from the Tower and used it to commit crimes. The show ended before this could ever be resolved, and he was very popular for being mysterious and edgy.

And so, recently, DC decided to do a comic arc to bank on nostalgia. It did not work out so well. Granted, it probably doesn't help that the common consensus is that Red X in the show was almost certainly Jason Todd.
