bump

Definitely the Fawcett one, as much as I like Mar'Vell. DC are at fault for the name lapsing after suing Fawcett and halting use of the character for 20 years. It's almost a certainty he would have been dead forever if not for Mar'Vell

Billy has the best enjoyable stories.

definitely not Danvers, that's for sure

I agree with most of this but DC did buy rights to the Marvel Family in 1972 and would have started using them, same as the Quality and Charlton characters.

No connection to Captain Marvel. Are you thinking of Hoppy the Marvel Bunny?

The real Captain Marvel, not any of the wannabes of recent years.

The one and only!

Nah, she's just the latest in a series of characters Marvel uses to hold trademark to the name. There will be other Captains Marvel after she fades away.

She's the best of the best

In Superman 276, entitled "Make Way For Captain Thunder!," Superman has his first encounter and battle with Captain Marvel, who in the issue is called "Captain Thunder" and portrayed as an alternate reality Golden Age version, due to Captain Marvel already having another book which was more cartoony in style running at the same time at DC when the story was written. In the story Cap turns evil every time he transforms, due to a spell placed on him by his enemies, the "Monster League of Evil," and Superman has to get him to snap back to his senses.

In the end he does, with Superman thinking about how much he respects Captain Marvel for being pure of heart.

They started suing Fawcett in the 30s and forced Fawcett to stop using CM in the 50s after years of litigation. Mar'vell first appeared in '68. DC aren't the good guys.

She's a placeholder, keeping the trademark active. Marvel had a few others using the name before her, there will be others after she's gone.

Pretty much. Fawcett settled around 1954, but superheroes were in a slump then and Fawcett would likely have dropped the character anyway.

In 1967, Martin Goodnan saw the name wasn't being used and ordered Stan Lee to grab it. That,'s how we got the Tree character Mar-vell.

In 1972, DC bought the rights to the Marvel Family. n
Now DC can use Captain Marvel, they just can't put his name on the covers or promotional material. It's a shame.

None will be as good

Mary

It's a shame but I think despite Goodman's motive, Marvel creators did good work with most of the characters who came out of it, and National/DC only themselves to blame for branding issues after taking out frivolous lawsuits.

OnOne was already better. Three if you include Junior and Mary.

Nope, Carol is the best

Oh, I like what Jim Starlin did what the character. You can't blame Marvel for holding on to the trademark and keeping a potentially serious rival character down. That's how businesses work.

DC did bring back C.C. Beck, Captain Marvel's creator in the early 1970's to draw the revival.

Not even close.

Correct, Carol is far better

True, and he hated the new stories.Beck was a cranky old curmudgeon even when he was young!

>hiring the guy you stopped getting paid from releases of his high-selling character to promote that you bought the character from the company you sued
t-thanks, DC!

So wrong. The real Captain Marvel stories had heart, genuine emotions, they ranged from human interest to horror to slapstick. Carol Danvers is okay at best, she'll never be a household word.

She already is, unlike Billy

Nah. Carol’s firmly established now that she had her own movie. She’s set to be THE Captain Marvel from here on out.
