That's because boys play videogames, girls watch cartoons. Might be a questionable metric to go by, but notice how online circles like DeviantArt, tumblr etc. are seemingly female dominated, 'least that's the impression I had in my time in those places. If that demographic extends to actual viewers too then the choice to cater more to girls isn't unwise on a commercial standpoint

Like who? Genuinely curious. I should say that you don't need to relate to a character in order to empathize with their struggles, and the empathy, for me, is enough o enjoy a show. I don't 'relate' to Anne, but I empathize, which makes her journey fun to watch. Same with a character like Luz or Tulip.
