Actually, by my experience, FF.Net is much saner than AO3. You check out fics for a certain fandom on FF.Net, chances are, you'll see a vartiety of genres (adventure, romance, action, slice-of-life). You check out fics for a certain fandom on AO3, 80% of it is shipping and like 40% of that is someone's degenerate fetishes. I think most anons can back me up on this one.

Can confirm. I’ve been using FF.net for more than 10 years (man that sounds bad, well I’ve been here longer) and stories there are quite tame.
I think it’s because fics aren’t allowed to be NC17, so writers can’t go overboard with their fetishes. Granted it relies on user reports so things slip through the cracks. Some authors can circumvent it by posting the raunchy stuffs somewhere else, but that rule does discourage people from writing degenerate shits.
I started using AO3 recently and oh boy, it’s like a discount tumblr. The freedom of tags probably help. I just go there for the smuts.
Also shipping is pretty prevalent on both sides, maybe more on AO3. FF.net only had its pairing tag like 5 years ago.
