They really should have made either Zuka and Azula twins or Zuko 17 and Azula 16. She doesn't act or look like a 14 year old.

Can the avatars cure psychopathy?That seems to be the biggest problem in her behaviour in the meantime time of the events of the series.

Probably not literally but I think Azula being reformed is very much possible and could be intresting. I disagree with the sentiment it should have happened in the show proper, her descent into insanity made for so much memorability: A memorable juxtaposition to Zuko, a memorable miniboss just before the final boss (which to be frank, actually ended up being the better of the two) and just an overall memorable villain. Azula needed to go full psycho on the show, but a sequel series that focuses on her redemption would also work with good writers.

And I know the comic touches on this, but everyone I ask tells me the comics aren't good beyond the art so I haven't bothered reading them.

That's sort of the point with her. It's a facade.
In the comics the writing is shit, she gets put in a mental facility where she's restrained 24/7 and constantly chi block'd which fucks her up worse then she mentally gets worse and worse. Currently she's not hallucinating because she's "helping" zuko by trying to make him a tyrant, she could probably go from villain to anti-hero to redeemed with her current motivations. But yeah reading the comics is a waste of time unless you just want to be mad.
