their "ugly" because their trying to make unique looking characters. Anime is literally trying to get incels to buy their dvds and merch by making them look "appealing". And when I mean appealing, sometimes it's blatant sexualization of characters.

that's because they are using basic realistic figure drawing, this is why every character looks the same, they are like mannequins. Most cartoons are completely flat.
