Boys get shit guidance from culture and most have few male mentors actually in their lives, many fail to develop functional social skills when young and it becomes a negative feedback loop of ever great social isolation.

Basically the Direct Market killed the Romance genre, which includes the Romcom subgenre.
I will point out that there are some holdouts left, though it's pretty much just Archie these days and some indies that are barely keeping their doors open. It's tragic because apparently back in the day it was a pretty popular genre, especially among girls.

This. Romance books, movies, TV shows, etc are hugely popular in the US and around the world. Romance comics are hugely popular in markets like Japan where they're made. People love romance and romcoms, it's just that the mainstream American comics market is fucked up beyond repair and beholden to a shrinking group of aging autists who bitterly resent any mention of the love or affection they never had.
