The summit

squarepusher - "feed me weird things" and "hard normal daddy"
bola - "soup"
team doyobi - "push chairs for grownup"
probably above are the only IDM albums I have not soured on with the years, everything else IDM is ephemeral trash
[notwitsstanding aphex twit which is almost a genre to himself - can't stand autechre beyond incunabula save for a handful of 90's tracks]

If you're going to make a mountain analogy, Saw85-92 is just the beginning of the ascent, hardly the summit.

youtube.com/watch?v=22mHH_mujWs

85-92 has always been what I'd use as a starting point, it isn't even close to greatest IDM ever imo.

Autechre, Plaid, Yimino, Brothomstates, , Ilkae, Luke Vibert, Lackluster, Jega, Global Goon, Skee Mask, Exm, Mark Pritchard, Ulrich Schnauss, Casino Versus Japan, UZIQ, Machinedrum, Kid606, Two Lone Swordsman, Mouse on Mars, Telefon Tel Aviv, Kettel, Nathan Fake, The Black Dog, Speedy J, Sabres of Paradise, Gridlock, Phoencia, Amon Tobin, Arovane (Tides is fucking boring though), Venetian Snares, Ceephax Acid Crew, Clark, Squarepusher, Zuli, Tim Koch, skurken, John Tejada, Karsten Pflum, Mira Calix, Donato Dozzy, Brainwaltzera, Fasme, Matmos, Ruby My Dear, Trypheme, Locust, Actress, Colloboh, Lorn are some examples of artists that have delved into IDM who have made fantastic songs or albums I love. I know I've heard many more but it's hard to think at the moment.

The cool thing about IDM is that it fuses with a lot of electronic and techno music, and could be more minimalist or fucking insane. It depends on the artist, many just like experimenting with rhythm and melody. Aphex Twin and BoC are fantastic but they're not my toptier ever. There's a lot of great artists who sadly get put in a "derivative/ripoff of Boc/Aphex" bucket that's so false and annoying. I don't go into IDM like critics do and expect it to be a cohesive album and assume the artist is making something so artistically challenging when they're just making techno bangers they liked making. You have to be open minded for IDM and just hope the song is catchy to you. Which is how I think artists like above like Plaid, Yimino or Brothomstates surpass Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada for me. They know how to craft more memorable and tunes that have amazed me and left me wanting to find more tunes like that. Listening to a lot of talented Warp acts is great, but if you see what they're into, or explore smaller labels from various countries that do this music... 1/2

...you'd find something that'll be just as amazing to you as experiencing 85-92 or Boards of Canada for the first time.

It's why I dispise critics for completely ignoring IDM and just saying to everyone "yeah you should judge everything that came after 85-92 and make sure it's not ripping off it's genius" as if other big acts like LFO, Black Dog or Autechre under Lego Feet weren't making phonemenal tunes before 85-92 got released. There's so much good stuff out there, give it a shot. You might find something that helps you drift off at night with headphones on. There's so much good stuff (Especially in the 00s-present) that's straight up ignored. I just don't like talking about it with /bleep/ schizos.

god i forgot to mention Daedelus, he does a lot of styles though but has delved into idm plenty of times.

IDM has never died. It's just going unnoticed.

Tycho is shit though

Come to Daddy. Listen to the album in its entirety. Probably one of the most approachable.

After this Bogdan Raczynski is worth checking out.

If this doesn't push your buttons, ngmi.

i love bogdan's first three albums but his trashy tracker sound is going to be a hard sell for someone into boards of canada.

I always get filtered by the mummy mix. everything else is kino tho.
