I think it's all to do with the right mindset. This rebellious "fuck the world" mindset. When most people start listening to metal, they don't have this mindset, it has not yet been engrained into their brains. However, the more you listen to metal, the more you adopt this mindset. The same is true with all music most likely. I can see this working for rap too, but the mindset for rap is "look at me, i'm the coolest person alive."

i think when you first hear a genre of music you tend to just pay attention to the most superficial sonic impression which with metal is ugly ratty distorted sounds and harsh vocals and stuff
when you listen more and get past the surface you start to pay attention to what the musicians are actually trying to do with those sounds and it clicks
