I just realized that I always play Em leads over the E blues progression. But Em sounds so much better and more bluesy. Do I actually not know what good music sounds like or is playing the true minor (not relative) kosher?

This is gonna sound stupid cause I don't really know how to word the question, but how do you learn to play music rather than songs? In other words, I don't care which chords make up wonderwall; I just want to use the knowledge I've gained to noodle around and entertain myself with stuff that makes sense and sounds good. For example, I've learned some scales but no one seems to explain what to DO with them. Are there resources that explain this kind of thing rather than "here's a dozen beginner pop/rock songs to play"?

What do you mean? You just wanna be able to play parts all over the neck that work with wonderwall for example?
Luke Watson
Thats actually something that fucked with me. Like "why does this minor note sounds good while i know it's supposed to be a major note" There is no doubt a technical reason, but in the end i was like, if it sounds good it's good.
Camden Nelson
Find chords in those scales or change the scale if you feel another chords fits better. Trial and error.

Two general approaches: 1. Theory first. Choose key, come up with something in it. 2. Feel and ear. Jam out some stuff, put it together, apply some theory later if needed to unify some parts together. I hum things, record them, then make guitar or bass ideas from that idea.

>here's a dozen beginner pop/rock songs to play Step 1: play those dozen rock songs but take the best part from each of them. A nifty pull off, a cool bend, whatever catches your ear Step 2: Assemble those pieces into the same key and string them together, changing the order around. Learn how to migrate from one lick to the other Step 3: find jam tracks on youtube in your desired key, and play your licks along with them Step 4: play your own chords with those licks stuck between them to bridge the chords together. Learn how to use those licks in conjunction with all the barre chord formations and with open chords if you play acoustic a lot
