...though it should be said that he has never given up on his absolutely abyssmal production values even in a time when there's no reason for it. Andy Partridge said that his music sounded as though recorded through a toilet paper roll, and he was right.

he did this project where there's a lot of the big classics but with cleaned up production. I think it sounds bretty good

I wonder why he mellowed out the arrangement. I feel a lot of the fierceness and tunefulness of the original is filtered out in this version.

it's more stripped down you're right. But honestly Cleaners isn't XTC and I think the lo-fi "shitty" production style adds to the charm of the music if nothing else. I mean it would be cool to see what he could have done with a sizeable budget back in the late 80s or early 90s but I guess they weren't about that

Yeah, Newell's a strange bird. He has described his Stray Trolleys days as basically cocooning himself in the studio when he wasn't gigging and just fooling around with the effects to get the best take. And yet most everything he's put out sounds as though recorded on a cassette in a boombox.
