Mark was a fucking crazy talented guy, musically he's basically what cobain would've been doing if he didn't off himself. His first solo album sounds vocally a lot like nirvana stuff so he spent the rest of his career to steer away from it. He legit wasn't interested in fame and being a poser rock star.
