They were popular with edgelord kids. Then they made the bigger shift with Vol.3 once nu metal was dying out.
Vol. 3 was something of a "Black Album" moment, suddenly they got a lot of play on rock radio and normies would be like "yeah I don't really know about Slipknot but I love that Duality song!"

Good gimmick with the masks, strong pop singles, duality, before I forget, wait and bleed. Average listeners when slipknot came out loved rock music.

no, he plays samples of random noises, movie quotes, that kind of stuff. it was actually pretty intricate in the first album but by the time Vol. 3 came around it would've made basically no difference if hehad been fired
