What is indie? I've been hearing that term for over a decade and still don't know what people are talking about when they say it. Is it just any poppy music not on a major label?

yup it was the end. The end product of 10-15 years of early, widespread internet culture which still had a fun, creative, and explorative nature to it all. Normies then invaded when smartphones spread and turned it all into one gigantic war for attention which is pre-built to be won by the the massive of artists both past and present. it's ogre

I think OP is talking about The Kills

I've tried looking into what it is but it just confuses me more because what is being described here doesn't sound like a music genre. What are the supposed musical characteristics common to indie music?

I think OP is reffering the the garage rock and post punk revival in the 2000s.

there is still relatively decent indy being released past your time frame bud,
as a whole though your prolly right.

What musical characteristics are common to rock?

I dont know. Amplified guitars and drum kits are pretty ubiquitous. I'm sure there were better answers at earlier dates (50's and 60's Rock was less varied and it just got more varied cause the past doesn't go away) but rock has become too broad of a genre label that tries to describe hundreds of different things, which is why now people will talk about what subgenres or sub-traditions within rock that they like rather than just saying they like rock. Rock has songs that range from 2 seconds to tens of minutes, varies widely in tone has subgenres that hate on each other, etc. I dont think rock is a real genre of music anymore in any practical way. Its more like a category like "traditional folk music" or "electronic music", or, from what I can tell, "indie".

i wonder how only Arctic Monkeys was the only one that managed to survive the times mate

so many good stuff
Feist hitting top 10 billboard will never happen again

You weren't suppose to actually answer, you were suppose to realize your question an assertion of 'musical characteristics' were too simple for how complex the subject is. You're confused not because Indie isn't well defined, but because you are confused about genre in general.

who's that slag?

zoomer alert

Indie Rock is just rock music played as effeminately as possible. I'm glad that the jangly, "look how much of a metrosexual incel I am"
music is over.

yeah, all that sanitized indie like vampire weekend, anco...

I'm so glad rock music is back to being masculine.
