figure out what a measure is (when the phrase loops in some way)
count the length of the loop in whatever subdivision you need to (quarter notes, eight notes, or even sixteenth sometimes)
if it loops after 4 quarter notes, it's probably in 4/4
if it loops after 8 eight notes, it's probably also 4/4, because no one really writes music in 8/8 lol
if it loops after 7 eight notes, the time signature is probably 7/8
