I couldn't believe it when I read that it was "supposed" to be him that died in the tour bus crash. That is some weird twist of fate movie plot bullshit.
You have the guy who is amazing at his instrument, great at writing, and loved and idolized by the fans. He falls asleep in the bunk of the guy who sucks at his instrument, sucks at writing and producing, and would go on to be reviled by fans and the population in general. Everyone, even die hard fans, admit that if Metallica got a new drummer, they would have been on top of the world. They would have had the pick of the crop. The most basic up-and-coming teen thrash drummers were all better than Lars, and they could have picked the best.
But no. The cool trump card member died while the shitty ball and chain lived, nay, the shitty ball and chain lived BECAUSE the cool trump card died.
