So I just got done listening to Burzum’s Filosofem. Keep in mind, the only black metal I’ve legitimately enjoyed before hearing this is literally Lil Ugly Mane’s Vudmurk project, so I’m not too much of an expert on this kind of stuff.
With that said, I found this album to be EXTREMELY underwhelming. Not bad by any means, but just a big let down. I love the first track and the second track is pretty nice, but everything else just feels like a wash. The other metal cuts are forgettable and don’t do anything to match the first two tracks, and don’t even get me started on the 25 minute ambient track that goes absolutely NOWHERE. It’s the same notes repeated again and again for 25 minutes with barely any buildup or sonic changes throughout. Complete waste of time.
Is there something I just don’t understand about this album or did I set my expectations too high? I mean, this is literally considered the best black metal album OF ALL TIME so I think I had some reason to be excited. Oh well. What do y’all think?
its fine, user. I agree with you, the 25 minute long song is filler and goes nowhere. But the rest of the album is pretty enjoyable. maybe it grows on you.
I love the album. I don't like most black metal because it's not as grimey yet catchy as burzums first few albums, this included. The long thing ID GUESS is a precursor to dungeon synth maybe. And I know weirdos are really into that. So maybe that's something.

Love this album because every song is different in it's style but still has the same recognizable vibe, and every song is pulled off great. Yeah it requires some patience but it's the perfect music to just lie in bed at night and listen to

every song on this album is not designed to be a banger at all, it’s designed to put you a trance to where you really feel like you’re a pagan Viking roaming the snow covered forests of Scandinavia. the songwriting on the ambient songs is exactly the same as the guitar oriented ones, just a different instrument I would listen to it again after blasting a lot of weed. if you still don’t like it try some pussy hipster black metal like deafheaven or holy fawn to ease your butthole into it, or move over to darkthrones first album for straight bangers
