is there any more dark, apathetic funk like this? I've heard some other Sly and D'Angelo's last album but nothing sounds as rough and drugged out
Is there any more dark, apathetic funk like this...
idk that album is pretty much peak modern american music, check out the Original Raw Soul compilation youtube.com
There aren't any. This album is one of a kind.
Purple Image - S/T from 1971. It is the perfect combination of really rough hard/psych rock and deep soul vocals while also using funk riffs. Really underrated album.
Forgot to mention Stone Coal White as well another really obscure heavy funk/soul group with that rough rock edge.
Thanks breh
clash
Electric Miles sometimes, particularly on Get Up With It
Tyler, the Creator- Igor
Not really the same but if you like that, you will like Funkadelic. This is my favorite album of theirs, I think it's incredibly underrated and it has a song thats basically a spiritual sequel to Maggot Brain, and I prefer it to Maggot Brain

every now and then, the dubs lie.
this
That's my favorite album of all time. Unfortunately there's nothing else QUITE like it. But check these out for similar atmosphere/instrumentation:
Several mid-70s Funkadelic albums (esp. Cosmic Slop, Let's Take It To The Stage, Tales of Kidd Funkadelic)
The 2012 compilation Personal Space: Electronic Soul 1974-1984
These are really good ty user. Purple Image is a bit more rock but Stone Coal White nails it
Good Thoughts Bad Thoughts is peak feels
hey this is really good
The only funk-adjacent thing more dark and apathetic:

anyone care to post the artist or album? would like to check it out
Oh wow user, this is "There's a Riot Going On" by Sly and Family Stone from 1971. You gotta listen to it.
