it's lazy songwriting. when you've got an album with 12 songs and every song is 2:30-3:00 long, it's obvious that not a lot of effort went into it.
harmonies and melodies are also not as elaborate or beautiful as Dark Tranquillity and In Flames.
It's more popular because it's easier to mimic.

I still like, nonetheless. But Heartwork riffs harder, The Gallery is more atmospheric, and Jester Race is more melodic.

It’s more of a joke to hate on this album, and melodeath in general, than it is to hate on something like say nu metal and Slipknot. It was obviously a big influence on some metalcore and deathcore bands but it’s still a generally acclaimed album.

the most important metal record of the 90s is clearly Heartwork since that's what this bullshit album was ripping off.

If we're going based on melodeath The Red In The Sky Is Ours is what opened up the gates for the genre anyway. Heartwork showed that bands didn't need to actually come up with interesting riffs and could just play arena rock with yelly vocals while Slaughter of the Soul showed how bands could write melodeath with even less effort by just playing riffs from Master of Puppets at a slower speed.

the big thing about the red in the sky is ours are those beautiful violin interludes that just disappeared from the band's sound later on

slaughter of the soul is a clear "homage" to heartwork, which is the album that is actually responsible for making the bridge between Iron Maiden and Morbid Angel

heartwork is iron maiden but heavier where as slaughter of the soul is swedish death crossed with the speed and anger of hardcore. heartwork is midpaced and not really that similar, the dueling guitar melody thing is much more an in flames/dark tranq thing than an at the gates thing

the big thing about the red in the sky is its dissonant riffing and unorthodox song structures that gave the album an abstract feel. the violins contribute to that idea but aren't the singular factor, as all decent works aspire to be greater than the sum of its parts. the album feels utterly otherworldly and has not ever been reproduced since because it's a singular work of art, or at least has the pretension of being one, which elevates it above the field. demilich, ved buens ende and gorguts' obscura or others that come to mind as cut from similar cloths.

slaughter of the soul, fitting to its name, is such a soulless 180 in comparison. none of the riffs are challenging and the song structures are so basic you can predict what you hear before it's played. but basic melodeath is comforting and unengaging in the way pop music is, so it gets popular. at the gates end up winning swedish grammies for it though, so all the better for them taking death metal, what should be antithetical to popular appeal, and nonetheless managing to sterilize it enough to pander to popular appeal.
