Creativity always ends up getting warped by efficiency and systemisation. It can be corporate, but the money listens to the largest group of people. If people were demanding high levels of musicianship, we'd still be getting lots of it. Each year, song forms simplify further.
We've moved away from depth in favour of breadth (in movies, TV shows, music, video games, using a million SaaS webapps for work, thinking about lots of things but not thinking about anything deeply, etc). There's so much going on that one can't process it all.
To make music digestible to the masses as they are now means to simplify music to the point of a song barely being anything. Just as written communication is getting simpler and simpler.
The next 'revolution' musically will have to be a return to complexity, like the reverse of grunge.
