I just looked at the insane thread on ToneJunkie. And a recent one on Rick Beato. And a couple on Rhett Shull, Music Is Win, etc etc etc.
The amount of unbridled hate for these guys on Any Forums is fascinating to me. I've been flirting with YouTube myself, learning the ropes and making my first batch of mistakes and wins. It's fun, it's hard work, and believe me it takes some balls. First you battle the voices in your own head, and then all the armchair experts who say you're an idiot. And I'm not saying I'm a fan of all these guys; it's hit & miss most of the time for me (as I'm sure I will be for others). But here's the thing:
YOU DON'T HAVE TO WATCH There is a crowd for any given creator, and that doesn't have to be everybody. Yes there are a few guys who piss NO ONE off like Tim Pierce and Pete Thorn. But some of these more 'colorful personality' types are going to bug you and that's OK. If you feel the need to tear them to shreds, ask yourself why. And why you watched.
"IT'S GOOD FOR THE GAME" All this online discussion amounts to one thing: guitar is actually relevant, music is being discussed instead of forgotten about, and having a lot of different places to go instead of just one or two magazines creates a pretty cool ecosystem if you ask me. Much like Any Forums itself.
YOU CAN DISAGREE AS AN ADULT If someone makes a point and you disagree, that's great. State your opinion. But the vitriol is suspect. Don't forget what your Mama taught you.
ARE YOU OK? Does it bother you when someone follows their calling? Does it make your blood boil that someone is taking chances and trying their hand at YouTube (or whatever) when you made safer decisions and have mixed feelings about it? I'm guessing here. Would you act this tough in person? Rhetorical question.
I guess all I'm saying is, different strokes for different blokes and all that. Anyway.
