>record produced by Columbia between 1950 and 64
Nice cynical, poorly produced slop made for suburbanites with no taste.

>Buddy Holly
>Richie Valens
>The Big Bopper

I'm calling it.
Rock and Roll music is DEAD!

For me it's Dion.

I hate Runaway, I hate that song.

Yeah that was a pretty rank label at the time.

For me it's Rosemary Clooney

seen in context, the mainstream record industry in the 50s was not especially keen on rock-and-roll. some labels like Dot and Mercury played both sides of the fence by signing rock or R&B acts or else distributing records for indie labels that lacked large-scale distribution capability. but they also loved taking mainstream acts like Pat Boone, the Fontane Sisters, and Gale Storm at Dot and Georgia Gibbs, Gaylords, and the Crew Cuts at Mercury, and feeding them rock crossovers. most of these artists have been disowned by rock snobs but at the time they logged huge hits.

well, anyway Mitch Miller was no more guilty than any other A&R honcho of the day for disowning rock-and-roll; indeed RCA, aside from Elvis, did not sign a single rock act until Jefferson Airplane a full decade later. the major labels wanted to peddle what they considered a "classy" image by marketing to middle class suburbanites with money and clearly they did not go much for rock-and-roll, R&B, country, or anything else perceived as hick or trashy. The times had to change eventually, once the Beatles came, Mitch's time had ended and he had to step down for younger A&R guys with longer hair.

MM was the ultimate Rochester guy and Rochester has always been a black hole that sucks the life out of music. unless it's absolute vanilla top 40, they won't hear of it there. if you go there today they probably think Ed Sheeran is the summit of musical achievement.

he was giving interviews in the 70s-80s where he was like "what's the deal with rock? why won't it go away?" Clive Davis talked about how behind the curve Columbia was when the British Invasion happened. Miller and Steve Allen in the 80s were still saying they never really accepted rock as a legitimate artistic format aside from select Beatles and Dylan songs and "you can never go broke underestimating the stupidity of the masses."

>Mitch Miller's reputation as the ultimate peddler of white bread 50s schlock pop earned him a bad reputation from rock historians, even though, bizarre as it sounds, some performers like Woody Herman and Frank Sinatra, both of whom were not exactly known as rock enthusiasts, accused him of being responsible for rock-and-roll (!) and not the Osmonds' or the Monkees' brand of rock-and-roll either. He discovered and signed young rising stars like Guy Mitchell, Tony Bennett, and Rosemary Clooney, while also working with established industry pros like Doris Day and Jo Stafford. Mitch thought Frank was the problem, not him, and churches were accusing the Chairman of the Board of being degenerate, a bad influence on kids, and urging the boycott of his records, one reason for his gradual postwar career decline.

>He signed some black performers as well in a bid for racial inclusiveness at Columbia, which, being a Jewish man, he was a bit sensitive to--these included Leslie Uggams, Sandy Stewart, Diane Trask, and of course Aretha Franklin. But the British Invasion had to mean Mitch's inevitable retirement for the younger Clive Davis. He never reconciled with rock, but also opposed the censorship efforts of groups like the PMRC, saying something being distasteful doesn't mean it should be banned.

The Bugs

Ungh what a bad bitch.

Mitch may have not been totally responsible but the early 50s charts had various uptempo novelty songs like Music Music Music that weren't based on big band arrangements and could be seen as a G-rated precursor to rock-and-roll.

Anyone heard this new Surfin song? It fucking sucks

she kept on stubbornly making vocal jazz albums until her death in 2002 but by the last 20 years she just sounded like Yosemite Sam from age and chain smoking

Just heard this new group called the four seasons. Their lead singer is unbelievable. They're gonna be huge no doubt about it

balcony looks very unsafe

oh man you haven't known bad Columbia albums from this period until you sampled this hilariously terrible "country" record. between the usual shit Columbia mastering, her oversinging that also manages to be completely flat at the same time, and the carnival organ, this is truly an example of cynical assembly line product made for suburban NPCs.

Just don't fall off. What are you, one of those queers who bought a car with a seat belt?
