I didn't learn this until I picked up bass. On bass it becomes obvious right away as you tend to get accidental fret buzz if your finger lands too far back of the fret (on a correctly set up bass).

Is there any downside to anchoring your pinky on the pickguard/body when picking? I've grown too used to it but I rarely see pros doing it. Is it a bad habit or something? I find that it tends to help with my accuracy and muting but is it hurting my picking speed?
