Funnily enough I decided to expand the timeframe on the data for google trends and when you do so to as far back as 2004, you get a different picture painted. Black metal certainly is the most searched genre at the moment (and keep in mind dominating search terms can also correlate with curiosity rather than popularity) but when extended over a near 2-decade period one finds that death metal is indeed the most searched term.
Thrash falls well below and at one point was neck and neck with grindcore but now dominates over grindcore. Grindcore used to dominate over doom metal but now is neck and neck slightly losing out to it
