Prodigy and Chem Bros were the first wave of commercial EDM in the States. They didn't get as big as the douchebags of today (the other assholes you mentioned), but they planted the seed.
The electronic scene in general loves arguing about sub-genres and what is and isn't "real"
For now I'd say start with the Techno basics and then get into the side projects of whoever you like:
