theres a shit load of "trail songs" type albums if you didn't know. Johnny Cash has like 10 of them, some are about Indians or some are about robbing traints, etc
any more like this?
sweetheart of the rodeo is ace
Country is not an albums genre. Most singers don't write their own songs, and so they might have a brilliant single and then a shit record, etc etc. That said Trace Adkin's Every Light in the House is also a really good song kinda in that vein youtube.com
Check out John Prine. Country-folk. I love his song “Illegal Smile”
>Country is not an albums genre.
Not really true
Country fans have always been like rock fans, more likely to buy albums than singles (biggest reason both genres have had trouble adjusting to the world of spotify)
A lot of country singers are songwriters, too, this isn't the biggest issue
Top country acts have always been very prolific though, under huge pressure to crank out albums very quickly
This means you are way more likely to get a great fertile period of 3-4 albums that all have a few great songs and a lot of filler
Realistically the best way to get into country is through greatest hits albums of top stars who were legit musicians
>always thought I hated country
>found the highwaymen on youtube one day
>wtf I love country now?

One of my all time best moves was accidentally slipping down the Jimmy Webb rabbit hole
He wrote Highwaymen (the song)

Sometimes I think the only thing really wrong with music today is this generations lack of a Jimmy Webb to get everyone else to start thinking again
based.
Basics are:
Johnny Cash- Live at Folsom Prison
Townes van Zandt - Our Mother the Mountain and the self titled album
John Prine- John Prine
Willie Nelson- Phases and Stages
More contemporary stuff which are abit more Alt-Country but still have a great country foundation:
Sturgill Simpson: Metamodern Sounds in Country Music and A Sailor's Guide to Earth, my favourites of his:

Colter Wall: Imaginary Appalachia (EP) haven't listened to his LP, but these two songs are definitely my favourite country songs from the past decade:
