They do 3 months for the price of 1 twice a year, that's what I've been rolling with for the past 3 years.
I'm okay with ads on the desktop version where I can still pick songs. 25 bucks for 6 months of premium total a year is worth it to me. By the way from what I've been able to gather, they do the 3 months for 1 around november and may, sometimes late november / early december

Just block the ads directly if you're on pc. There's a github project called blockthespot that does it automatically, but you have to run it every now and then in case spotify got updated.
