He was more of an arranger, and arrangers don't get much credit. It's like halfway between being a writer and producer but you don't get paid for it.

He's responsible for all the most interesting musical choices on any TVU album. His background in minimalism and drone brought almost all the experimental aspects, which you can tell by how Lou went on to be kind of a pop rockstar and how the most interesting Nico albums are Cale-produced. Cale's influence as a producer post-TVU suggests to me that he probably brought a lot of big-picture vision to their albums and was very much a guiding figure. No chance TVU would have been half as good without him.
