So who did it better? RYM so far seems to be siding with HOL but Vespertine is very close

Vespertine And it’s not even close.

Taylor Swift.

Not a fair comparison since they dont sound alike at all. The only thing they have in common is being classified under the "art pop" genre, which tells you jackshit about how the music actually sounds

But Vespertine by a landslide

Vespertine massively overrated, not quite as good as Hounds.

Never heard folklore, I see?

Both are essentially if RYM pretended music by Doja Cat, Gayle, Nicki Minaj and similar generic corporate pop artists made high art

Both are high art and not corporate at all

not really comparable, but hounds of love is one of the best of its genre, whereas vespertine is one of the best of all time

Vespertine has the best closing track of all time

Kate Bush cooperated with a bunch of people to make her "high art" though.

So can’t high art be a product of collaboration or something? What are you implying?

Like Bjork, Bowie, and everyone else
And having musicians play out what you're directing and writing was necessary in those days

just some bs criticism about kate having people play out stuff from demos she made as if she had no hand in the overall creative process of her music

Not him, but bad examples. You're right but they suck

>Both are high art and not corporate at all
So which is it, you can use a lot of bodies to make high art, or you can't?

Isn’t it still necessary these days? Because the ones who claim to do everything on their own usually put out shitty lo fi bedroom pop
Exception is probably someone like Julia Holter on Tragedy which is the good kind of bedroom pop

Are you that guy that made that Holter thread a week ago?
The problem with a lot of bedroom musicians is that they lack any real ambition when it comes to making music and are content with making easy listening background tunes

very different albums, very different concepts.

what the fuck lmao

And yeah I'd say its still necessary that Spellling album that everyone was geeked over had a ton of credits to it

That criticism shouldn’t really hurt Kate because HOL’s strengths are almost entirely on its compositional side. The production is nice and all but Kate shines as a songwriter and arranger. So claiming there were a few sound engineers in the room or random people playing irish instruments hardly take away from her genius

And we shouldn't dismiss the other end of the spectrum as well. Corporations, or large teams of people coming together, can make high art.

Agreed

But were the random people playing Irish instruments, told what to play by Kate. Or were they given a song that wasn't quite polished yet, and told to do their thing, be free and feel the music. If the latter, I think you're being a bit of dick by dismissing them and not knowing their name and giving them proper credit.

Agreed. While Hounds of Love is a great listen, Vespertine just sounds otherwordly and it's going to be a while until it ages, since nobody has been able to replicate its sound.
