Probably to feel superior on their own terms because there's nothing about them in reality that actually puts them above others (achievements, etc). It's like not being able to win at the game so you pretend like you're playing your own and you make the rules to put yourself at the top. Not to say I'm exempt from this either.

Any Forumstants are just failed hipsters. If Any Forumstants had social lives, lived in cities, had decent jobs, and went to decent schools, they'd be hipsters. A Any Forumstant is what you get when you give a hipster autism, social anxiety, a little bit of fascist propaganda, and an unhealthy obsession with Korean pop stars or obscure 90s bands.
