Terrible boomer advice. In the world boomers grew up in, people learned music in the church and from friends and neighbors who regularly played with them and gave free lessons here and there. You are an atomized virgin who impotently plonkety plonks until you come up with something that doesn't sound absolutely god awful. If you arent balls deep eating, drinking and sleeping your local music scene and you think your gonna become a decent musician without any lessons or theory like your boomer rock hero you will fail miserably.
Scales arent pretentious. Extended chords are often theory wank that sound like shit in an actual musical context but are sometimes cool and you can use or disregard them at your leisure. But this attitude that you have to reinvent the wheel because boomers who didn't appreciate the social help they got along the way claim that that's what they did is doing nothing but holding you back.

I dont know why you guys purposely mystify this shit for yourselves. Ask any of these players, they literally know like 5 cool blues licks and just mix, match and vary them in every song they play. Thats not to disparage them but to just let you in on a trade secret.
There's a video with Dean Ween on YouTube where he talks about this too, that every guitar solo he plays is just Blue Sky by the Allman Brothers and Maggot Brain by Funkadelic mixed and varied to fit each song.
