Both probably. If you listen to duster's earlier music under the band Calm it's pretty much a smashing pumpkins/hum rip off and early duster also sounds like them too (East Reed). As well as the space themes which are similar

Hum are an amazing band, and so are contemporaries like the Poster Children and Quicksand. But they were all a little abrasive and experimental, just enough to keep them from being pop hit makers. They all wrote nice songs, but it wasn't quite as neatly packaged. Then bands like the Smashing Pumpkins and Deftones took their basic style, and they did make it perfectly digestible, made for pop radio and MTV. It's sort of like, why struggle trying to sell kids on Pulp and Suede, when you could give them Oasis and Blur, who are dumber and easier to sell? Why try to give kids Mudhoney and the Melvins when Nirvana does the same thing for a pop audience? Why hope the kids are smart enough for Richard Hell, when you could give the kids the same thing but 50 IQ points lower with the Sex Pistols?

I don't, and I don't think Deftones or Smashing Pumpkins are any less intelligent than bands like Hum. I actually think they're fairly heady, interesting bands, just more pop. However, I do think that Pulp and Suede specifically are generally smarter than Oasis or Blur, though I do like the other two. And I especially think Richard Hell is a lot smarter than the Sex Pistols. Better lyrics, more interesting guitar work from Robert Quine.
